Ricin production discovered in London - January 2003 A lab in a flat was discovered, containing equipment still having traces of Ricin, but the Ricin produced has not yet been found. 6 people of North African origin were held. Ricin has no antidote, is fatal if minute doses are injected. It cannot be absorbed through the skin, and no method of mass distribution is known. Small amounts could be put in aerosols. As a terrorist weapon it meets the needs, creating panic, but with controlled numbers of fatalities. Symptoms are similar to flu. In my view the largest risk is not mass injections or aerosol application but it being used as a contaminant in food. For example we should question if it could be introduced in somewhere like the palace of Westminster dinning areas, or aircraft catering. Alternatively it could be used to cause panic by contaminating food on shelves in supermarkets. Supermarkets have limited protection to spot shoplifters, but in an experiment I have recently done by getting material around a store and then leaving the trolley in one aisle while walking around and putting back items, it is clear that no one is aware of this risk, as no one took any notice of this. Advice: Be particularly aware of all food purchased. Look for breaks in seals, damage to packaging, injection marks in fruit. Although the manufacture was based in London, and is the most likely target, it is also the place you can most easily get to many locations by train.
